Trying one more time. Management is a major missing skill all over.

Initially I attempted to start this blog when there were a lot of priorites and therefore this addtional one was just one more to that list.

Now though I am trying again since there are a variety of issues taking place globally that have major impact on management practices and human resource issues.

This Killer Skills blog will hopefully provide an opportunity for a few to reflect on how to personally be effective while also identifying opportunities where personal impact may make an organizational difference.

Let me open with a couple of situations that make me hoepful.

First, I have just completed my third assignment in Shanghai in the last eighteen months. Change happens so quickly there that each time I return I am reminded of how quickly things get done. For instance, they have added one more subway line in just the time I have been visiting. This is especially poignant since at the same time this is going on, Baruch College where I teach in New York, still has escalators in repair, as they have been for more than two years. It boggles my mind to wonder how a subway can be completed in a developing world country faster than an escalaotr can be repaired in the US. My simple answer -- Managemeent.

Some will say I don't understand since this is a public project and there are unions to contend with. With an MPA and some experience with the public sector, including a tour of duty with the US Army in Vietnam, I answer that with the same work, Management. I don't mean to be flip but this is one opportunity for basic problem solving. Remember Donald Trump when NYC could not get the skating rink repaired in any time at any cost? He volunteered to do so.

Now he is not my idea of an effective manager (for starters he doesn't have the patience for process required, nor the interest) BUT he is samrt enough to recognize effective management so he assigned the project to those who managed it and completed the project earlier than projected and below budget.

That is it for today. I feel glad to be back already.
